With all the activity I’ve seen lately Google Plus seems to be gaining traction in the social media world. Many of us have been wondering when this would happen and knew it would given the rather obvious connection it has with the 800 pound gorilla in the search market that Google has become. Like Microsoft which at any given time has a few hundred spare engineers and a few billion dollars laying around to throw into any project we know that if they want to make it successful they will.
Many small businessmen are discovering Google Plus as another good channel to promote their business offerings, and maybe a better channel that Facebook and Twitter. As with those channels a common mistake is made: it’s used entirely for self-promotion. That’s a good way to lose what little influence you might hope to gain from those channels. What people are wanting to find on social media channels is something interesting and informative, not just stuff about how your sales last year increased by 20% or hearing your slogan again for the umpteenth time.
If you think of your activity on Google Plus and other social media platforms as a way to contribute rather than promote you will attract and hold the interest of more people.
You could even use it to launch into a career as a comedian like I was tempted to do after winning the Matt Cutts Meme contest over at the Link Builders community on G+ with this meme I created:
Get Social Sharing Icons On Your Website So You and Others Can Broaden Your Reach
If you have interesting and informative material on your website you have a good opportunity to publish it on as many media channels as you want to belong to. If you have a WordPress website this is made real easy with 3 plugins you can download in just a few clicks. I use Shareaholic for my posts and Social Media Feather for my pages. I like Shareaholic better but with the page builders on many premium themes the plugin may put the sharing icons in the wrong place so on my pages I put the Social Media Feather icons in the footer by using the AMR Shortcode Any Widget plugin which gives me a shortcode to put in a text widget for any footer or sidebar. I’ve also had to turn off the “Sharing is caring” text on one of my themes because it displayed in the wrong place in relation to the icons.
With these plugins it’s real easy for you to share your material or your readers to share your material on their favorite social media platforms. Shareaholic has an icon, the one on the right end of the row, that opens up another window with tons of social media platforms, many of which you’ve never heard of, but might be used by your readers. It’s not that people can’t put your information on their favorite social media channels it’s just that having a convenient social sharing icon for them to use at the end of your article makes it a lot easier for them and any time you make things easier it’s more likely to get done.
Google Might Love You More for Using Google Plus
Does Google favor material that gets shared on Google Plus more than what gets posted on your website and give it more visibility in their search engine results page? Many have reported so on a very limited number of posts made to G+ but it’s been enough to create a gold rush atmosphere as many site owners and webmasters rush to G+ and see if it won’t do some good. Next thing you know Facebook will be taking Google to antitrust court for having a monopoly due to an unfair advantage by way of having the dominant search engine just like companies took Microsoft to court for having an unfair advantage in selling productivity software like Office since the vast majority of computers used Microsoft’s operating system.
Predictions aside, Google Plus is offering a good way to “get the word out” regarding your contribution in your niche and if used wisely will be of benefit to many.
